How do I get my cat to stop climbing up in the Christmas tree?

My cat looks like Tarzan when he climbs up in the Christmas tree. He is always hyper and he is ruining the ornaments. His name is mittens. I don't want the Christmas tree to end up falling on him. HELP!!!!
